Abstract

Latin American countries are important partners for China in building a community with a shared future for mankind and key targets for international communication. The cognition and evaluation of the Communist Party of China (CPC) by their media and academia merit our attention. This paper first establishes a news corpus related to the "20th National Congress of the CPC" using big data capture technology and analyzes the reporting characteristics of Latin American media on the congress through corpus discourse analysis. Then, by reviewing academic literature such as major think tanks, paper databases, prestigious journals, and thesis reports from renowned scholars in Latin America, the paper employs document analysis to examine the research characteristics of Latin American academia regarding the governance experience of the CPC and Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era reflected in the report of the 20th CPC National Congress. The analysis reveals that, compared to the media, Latin American academia has a more comprehensive and objective understanding of the CPC, deeply recognizing the fundamental reasons behind China's economic and social development achievements under CPC leadership. They also generally agree with the diplomatic concepts and global governance proposals put forward by the CPC. However, influenced by the West and cultural and value differences between China and Latin America, there are still many misconceptions about the CPC among Latin American scholars. In response, we should prioritize Latin American academia as the key target for communication, better construct an external discourse system, tell China's story well, strengthen the promotion and interpretation of the CPC, and promote the construction of a Sino-Latin American value community.
